A plan was approved for three controlled deer hunts within city limits this fall and winter at the September 7, 2021 Mahtomedi City Council meeting.
The hunts, which will be conducted by Metro Bowhunters Resource Base, a volunteer bow hunter’s organization, will be held October 14th, 15th and 16th, November 5th, 6th and 7th and December 10th, 11th and 12th. The hunts will be held on city property and adjoining properties owned by willing landowners. PLEASE NOTE - KATHERINE ABBOTT PARK (Zone 3) WILL BE CLOSED ON THESE DATES.
An aerial count this spring showed 99 deer within city limits; other counts over the past decade have ranged from 73 to 120 deer.
Controlled hunts help reduce deer numbers to levels that prevent property damage, habitat loss and vehicle collisions. Some residents also have expressed concerns about deer ticks and the spread of Lyme disease.
Neighboring Birchwood Village will participate in the hunt; our cities joined forces last year for a similar hunt on the west side of Mahtomedi.
Deer harvested by the Metro Bowhunters Resource Base will be used by the hunters, donated to nearby residents who request it and given to area food shelves.
